Recovery

In my home town of Memphis, Tennessee, we watch fires devastate The West, tornadoes wreck The Middle, and hurricanes and floods destroy The Coast. Their 15 minutes of fame vanishes as it evolves into 15 years of pain, suffering, and never-full-recovery. Trump, his spineless party stalwarts, and his 74,000,000 gaslit supporters are the fire and weather devastation event that will affect the entire continent, and from which we will never fully recover, in 15 years, or likely in 15 lifetimes. Martin Luther King’s long arc of justice just received a huge kick in the arc, resulting in an aimlessly skewed trajectory which may never find its original path. I think of visionaries of prior centuries or millennia, who, in the midst of unspeakable pain and injustice, must have thought “surely, there is a better way…” but were denied seeing any of their hopes materialize. At long last, we thought the 20th century was the brew pot of at least a few of these hopes. The ingredients of fairness, aware...

Hope Died

I awakened this morning to a sense of loss, loss of a greater kind than simply the loss of an election. I do feel like something has died. Probably hope. And certainly progress of the last 75 years has been erased. I was clinging to the thinnest gossamer thread of naïveté, and thought that sheer decency would carry the day. How wrong I was. Even before today, however, I had shifted my rage and incredulity to the American public—idiotic racist xenophobes—who, like another author said, have “aligned themselves with the core tenants of brutality." I periodically recite speeches in my mind (that will never be delivered) and each time, I exhaust the supply of adjectives to describe Trump’s repugnance, vile, and disgust.  This is not the America I learned about in elementary school. My loss of innocence is expected, but I refuse to give up on decency. I am ashamed to share DNA with the other 50% of my new America. In the airport today, I saw an ~18yr old kid, mouth and jaws slightly...

Donald Trump's Violent Rhetoric

Donald Trump's Violent Rhetoric (copied) I took the liberty of listing the dates for easier lookup. And by the way, how revealing is it to have a lookup table for your violent, repugnant, despicable, nefarious, misogynistic, [ed. note: I must stop the adjectives or I'll run out of room] acts and comments. [Excuse me, I had to just take a break and clean up the vomit on my floor. Happens every time I think about him.] This is my copy of the article, with dates, and my highlights. [I'll probably get in trouble for re-posting this article, but the original is   here . ] Donald Trump’s Violent Rhetoric: A Catalogue No American public figure has done more to normalize political violence. CATHY YOUNG JUL 17, 2024 FOLLOWING THE JULY 13 ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION of Donald Trump, his supporters—and many anti-anti-Trump commentators—have been wringing their hands about the supposed rhetorical extremism of Democrats and other Trump foes. It’s all a bit rich, though, given that violent, ...
